BAYNACH wines of 2018

January is the first month of the new year, it is also a period for the balance and the arrival of new wines from the previous year, which was in many ways different again. BAYNACH processed and prepared traditional varieties: Irsai Oliver, RIVANER (Muller Thurgau), Grüner Veltliner, Sauvignon Blanc, Zweigeltrebe-rosé, Alibernet, Babovinka Cuvée, Blaufrankisch.

Let us look back and remind the wine year 2018.

 

SPRING AND SUMMER 2018

The year 2018 was specific to the rapid onset of high temperatures in the spring, which fully returned in the summer. During the day, temperature reached 37 °C and night temperatures were 25 °C. This type of weather was caused not only by the increased grape harvest but also by the earlier onset of the individual development stages of the vineyard.

The grape harvest in the year 2018 exceeded the average yield at specific growing localities by an order of 30-50%. In order to en-sure a higher quality of wines, it was necessary to reduce the yield by dropping excess bunches. This action ensures higher sugar content of the grapes, but also less stress for the vine, which causes a lack of moisture. Such lightened shrubs brought quality varietal typical grapes - e.g. in the SAUVIGNON BLANC variety, this procedure proved itself to us again and brought us wine in the quality of late harvest in a beautiful varietal characteristic.

The warm weather was also affected by the reduction in the con-tent of acids, which are a typical sign of the freshness of white and rose wines, especially in our region, so it was important to monitor this parameter and with regard to their level to determine the date of harvest.

It is the setting of the harvest date that can often determine the quality or poor quality of future wines. We managed to collect grapes in really good condition in the year 2018, the GRÜNER VELTLINER (in the quality of a cabinet) was also demonstrated, which we processed 2 times in our young history. We are really happy with this wine, it is beautifully fruity, full, fresh with a typical varietal profile - it is currently "resting" in the cellar and will go into fulfill-ment in February.

AUTUMN 2018

After a warm and tropical summer, autumn surprised us with above-average precipitation - in some areas up to 120 mm fell in two days. Such an amount of precipitation resulted in the cracking of the skins of the grape berries and the onset of fungal diseases, which again significantly affected the dates of harvest of specific grape varieties. Varieties with a firm skin and a smaller bunch resisted damage. ALIBERNET proved to be very durable, overcoming the period without the slightest damage. Due to the health condition, the grapes remained at the root for as long as necessary and reached the desired degree of sugar content, even a certain proportion of raisins. That is why we have a BAYNACH ALIBERNET of the year 2018 in the quality of a selection of grapes. It will be typically dark red, in the taste clearly after berry fruit with rough tannins, which, however, gradually soften with maturation in our barrels. The estimated date of fulfillment is in May 2020, but we still offer Alibernet 2016, which is beautifully matured and is unique in that it is the first wine from the new planting of the DAMAŠKY locality.

THE FIRST BAYNACH WINES OF 2018

In the last month of the end of the year, we bottled and prepared for sale the varieties RIVANER (Muller Thurgau) and Cuvée BABOVINKA - they are very tasty and fresh wines from the RA: ZA collection, which were sold out last year, so we are very happy that they are again available.

RIVANER is fuller and more complex in taste, thanks to its better ripening at the root, it has a beautiful fruity expression in aromat-ics, mostly formed by the scent of citrus fruits and pears - the first impression is great. And even after the first sip, you will not lose this impression, the taste of the wine is beautifully clean and full, complemented by a familiar hint of sweet tropical fruits.

BABOVINKA - the wine is known to our consumers as a cuvée, while it is created by a blend of 3 varieties, mostly from IRSAI OLIVER and RIVANER. A significant proportion of the IRSAI variety will not deny the wine and those who are looking for a perfume flower bouquet will be satisfied. This typical expression is complemented by the aroma of citrus, which will accompany you in the taste of the wine - it is harmonious, fully in line with the aro-matic expression and fresh acidity at the end, which harmonizes with the higher residual sugar.

 

ON THE CONCLUSION

Winegrowers and winemakers who were able to mobilize their knowledge in time and put it into practice in quick succession can produce beautiful wines this year.

We can clearly state that the year 2018 wished especially to the earlier white varieties and red grape varieties, which are well resistant to fungal diseases.
